What kind of questions do you ask yourself late at night, while trying to fall asleep? This show may not answer the questions but it dares to ask the same questions. This has to be one of the most intricate shows I have ever seen. Dynamic characters and intriguing plot will hold you riveted the last half of the series. In the later episodes I suppose I should issue a content warning. There are no visual depictions of sex but there is one audible depiction. There is no nudity and no human based gratuitous violence. there are however some disturbing scenes of violence committed between the Eva's and angels. This is not a show for kids
This is easily the best anime series I have ever laid eyes on. It's not very humorous usually but when it is it will have you rolling. I like this series for the same reason I enjoy Babylon 5. Heavy Duty Plot. It is relayed so artistically that Hayao Miyazaki could be jealous. If you have no sense of art you may not enjoy this series quite as much as I did. Gainax certainly has a way with their drawings. Every technique used is employed to make this series the best it possibly could be. Pretty review is comprised of me spouting about how glorious Evangelion is. If you enjoy thinking when watching television this is the series for you.
In addition to reviewing this work I would also like to suggest some good reading to anyone who enjoyed Evangelion. If you enjoyed the characters, plot, and introspective nature of the show as much as I did, you should go pick up Orson Scott Card's Ender Series. "Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind". There are parallels a plenty between the two series, and Card definitely has a way with words. Art/Animation: (8) The character designs are good but there is a ton of shortcutting. But overall its not about the pictures. Imagery: (10) Yes when nothing is moving it is part of a shortcutting measure by gainax. It also adds to the effect. This series has a very artistic feel and contains some powerful imagery. Story: (10) Intriguing twisting turning plotline with underlying theme's and dynamic characters with human motivation. Sound/Soundtrack: (8) I love the opening theme. Handel seems to ...handle alot of the background music so I can't say it's bad but sometimes it seems out of place. Otherwise the original music stands well as an assitant to the action. Alot of the background is ambient noise that is used to good effect. Dub: (8) While not as good as the original featuring Megumi Hayashibara but this is the best I have heard out of AD Vision. Nothing is lost in the translationa dn the emotions and feelings of the characters are conveyed beatifully. Drama/Comedy: (10) Very real characters in very serious situations. Overall: (90) Go see it now. Only Macross Plus Compares.
