Grave of the Fireflies

Content Warning: There is no nudity in this film but there are some rather disturbing scenes depicting death that probably should not be viewed be a younger audience.

This is a story of a young man named Seita and his little sister Setsuko. Words cannot do this picture justice. It takes place during World War 2. Rent something else along with this movie for you will cry harder than you have ever cried before. This movie is very solemn so it's probably inappropriate for children. I cannot even begin to express the amount of emotion projected in this movie. There is no equal whether it be live action or animated. It is presented so artistically that you cannot help but know each character personally. I will not divulge too much of the actual story but I will say it is a masterpiece. Watch it the next chance you get.

The next time you feel sorry for yourself go rent this. It is subtitled so non anime fans may be apprehensive about this one. Don't be. I have heard stories of people who didn't know Japanese watching the original Japanese version without a translation, having to leave the room because they were so touched emotionally (actually she was crying so hard she couldn't see.) This will make grown men sob. I warn you this show is emotionally draining so make sure and rent a crazy comedy like UHF, Real Genius, Fierce Creatures, Strange Brew, or an other movie you know will have you rolling on the floor.

This is a movie I think everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.

Art/Animation: (8) This is ghibli studios. Very few lengthening tricks are used, but the framerate ain't up to disney fare.

Imagery: (10) Shocking scenes and beautifully represented people places and emotions. The scene with Setsuko and Seita surrounded by fireflies gets it a 10.

Story: (10) You can't deny the power held within this story. You will cry.

Sound/Soundtrack: (8) This is Ghibli. It also contains a stirring music box like arrangement that captures the spirit of this movie.

Performance: (10) Setsuko's seiyuu alone gives this at least an 8. Seita is also very well done.

Drama/Comedy: (10) This film is almost disturbing in it's emotional power.

Overall: (94) An almost perfect show.
