Well the first episode is really just a action based warmup for the rest of the story and has very litlle to do if anything with the rest of the plot line. But in it we have a fighter, mage, thief, elf, dwarf, and a cleric even. Well now that we have our well rounded party. This movie is filled with plot twists and is actually quite good. In fact so far it is one of my favorite fantasy epic anime. Spanning a total of 6 tapes you can find this series for about 100 bucks.
At the village Parn is in a bit of trouble. Apparently he has incited a war between the villagers and the goblins. Little do they realize that these goblins are being controlled by something malevolent. Well the story begins as our band wanders out to find what is controlling the goblins. Art/Animation (7) Hey I've seen that scene before. If there is a fight scene expect alot of recycled footage. Otherwise between that and the non-animated (dragons) kept this movie from scoring a bit higher. Other than that it is very good. Yeah that first dragon is cool. Imagery: (7) Has some powerful dragon scenes and outright breathtaking caverns in the last few episodes. Story: (8) This feels like a role-playing game. That's good I suppose. I sure liked it. The characters weren't overpowered as is normally typical in anime. Sound/Soundtrack: (8) This has a good original soundtrack. Dub: (5) Alright here's where it gets weird. I've seen subbed and dubbed versions and personally as long as it fits how the character is drawn I can stand a dub voice that isn't presented the same way as the Japanese seiyuu. Deedlit in japanese features a well known seiyuu who happens to be well known for her high pitched voice, I hate squeaky high pitched voices. I'd rather have this somewhat valley girlish voice actress anyday, and oddly enough it seems to fit the character. The dwarf is ruined in the Dub as is woodchuck. The woodchuck problem is almost enough to warrant getting the subtitled version. Parn is dead on, as is the cleric. The mage also seemed adequate. So it boils down to Deedlit the dwarf and woodchuck. I prefer deedlit dubbed, and the other two subbed. The subtitled tapes are and extra 20 bucks for the set. Drama/Comedy: (8) Very well done the characters seem at least somewhat dynamic. The bad guys are absolutely wonderful. Overall: (71 Dubbed) (75 Dubbed) Ask yourself this question is it worth 30 bucks extra?!?!? I'd say go out to your local large hollywood video which usually has the entire series in dubbed form and give it a rent. It's easily worth a rent. |
