Tenchi TV
Tenchi Collection :
Hmmm, how do you review a series as a whole? Well I'm about
to do just that. The story starts out with Tenchi Masaki, a young
man who is living with his widowed, yet almost lecherous, father
and his grandfather on his mother's side. All is quiet and
peaceful until out of the sky falls a spacecraft. Tenchi runs to
investigate, and finds a woman laying on a group of rocks. This
woman is Ryoko. (The silver haired one )
Those who are familiar with the OVA series know the characters.
Ryoko, Mihoshi, Ayeka, Sasami, Ryo-ohki, Tenchi, Washu, Kagato, Yosho.
Well you also meet Kiyone and Nagi later on. They are the same
people with the same personalities. Ryoko, the aggressive, cocky
space pirate, who's affection for Tenchi is most apparent. Mihoshi,
air head is a forgiving term for her, helium head is more like it.
Ayeka, a snobbish princess whose affection for Tenchi is manifested
in a more repressed manner unless Ryoko challenges her. Sasami,
Ayeka's younger sister, Sasami is impossibly cute to the point that
in an off shoot of Tenchi called "Magical Girl Pretty Sammy" her last
name is kawai (japanese for cute). Ryo-Ohki, a cross between a cat
and a rabbit that combines the cutest of both, oh and Ryo-Ohki turns
a spaceship. Tenchi, the main character, he's a little girl shy and
quite the nice all around guy, these women are a little aggressive for
him. Washu, the greatest scientist in the universe, A 20,000 year old
scientist stuck in the body of a 14 year old, and who makes constant
vain attempts to be cute. Kagato, the bad guy, nuff said. Yosho, for
all you who have seen the OVA's he's the same person.
Essentially this series is about the interaction between this
group of characters. After the first few episodes it gains a direction
as they find that supposedly "Yosho" has returned and claimed the Jurian
throne. This is the same throne that was to belong to Ayeka shortly.
A warrant is put out for Ayeka for being a traitor and the crew
ventures out to clear her name and unmask the false Yosho.
Overall the series is good, although a few episodes around the
middle are complete crap, the ending more than makes up for it. The
last two tapes being the best and having some downright powerful
scenes. Give this series a shot unless you hated the characters in the
OVA's. Otherwise it's a good fun series but overall lacks the depth
of comedy or depth of plot that many other anime series have.
Art/Animation: (6) It varies from episode to episode. I can go from
beautiful to complete crap. Pretty average for a series though.
Imagery: (7) Nothing artistic or striking except in the last few
episodes which bumped it from a 5 to a 7.
Story: (6) Well the main story is pretty fair and it's really good in
the last four tapes. The time episodes were entertaining as well. The
majority of the other episodes were rather.....crap.
Sound/Soundtrack: (7) The opening theme was pretty good. Even the
english version excelled. There's not alot of music throughout but what
is there sets the mood nicely.
Dub: (7) Ryoko, Mihoshi, Kiyonne, Yosho, Nobiyuki, and sasami are
good. Washu and Tenchi (near the beginning of the series) are so
completely annoying it's sickening. It would have gotten an 8 if not
for the most annoying US voiceactress in existence.... KT Vogt.
Drama/Comedy: (7) It's good for an occasional chuckle. Like I keep
saying the last episodes are great.
Overall: (66)
