Content Warning first: There is no nudity in the film but there is a passing scene where Kiyone must cover up after being teleported out of a bath into Washu's dimensional workplace. Only a little bit of blood is ever shown so it's pretty kidsafe. My little brother and sister love the movie. First off we need to make sure a few things are clear about this movie. First of all this is based off of the continuity of the television series not the OAV's. That would explain the presence of Kiyone, and absence of the Lighthawk wings. Let me fist touch lightly on the premise for this movie.
Now for the movie itself. We start out by finding out a little bit about Tenchi's mother whom, up to this point, we know very little about other than the fact that she is half Juraian (Jurai being the planet Ayeka and Sasami are from). Well while watching an old film reel of Tenchi's mother as a young women (filmed by Tenchi's father as a means of flirting) she all of a sudden begins to disappear. She is all of a sudden supposedly erased from existence. After a bit of investigation regarding this phenomenon Tenchi starts to disappear also. Washu (the greatest scientific mind in the universe with the most annoying american voice actor I have ever heard) erects a barrier to hold Tenchi in his own timeline. You have probably already guessed the inevitable. Tenchi and company must journey back in time to about a week before the incident and make sure nothing happens to his mom. This movie truly feels well, like a a movie. The soundtrack is beautiful and with the THX sound offers a truly immersive experience. The voice acting is top notch and because there's not alot of Washu in there I can't complain too much about it. The animation is superb some of the best Japanese theatrical animation I've ever seen. Lastly the storyline is great. It had girls who watched it with me crying and they hadn't even seen the Tenchi TV series yet.
Art/Animation: (8) This truly is wonderful animation. Some of the beginning scenes really are breathtaking. Imagery: (7) There are some powerful scenes at the end of the movie but otherwise this is typical anime fair. Nothing new or excruciatingly exciting. Story: (7) Hey look it's back to the future. While close, (go back in time and make sure parents are safe and fall in love.). There's this big ugly creature named kain who is genuinely evil. Sound/Soundtrack: (9) This movie is immersive in it's soundscape. You can tell this was a theatrical release. Turn on the stereo and go for a ride. Dub: (9) Excellent dub and the fact that washu hardly has any speaking scenes makes it even better. In fact this is one of the best dubs out there. Drama/Comedy: (7) Not a thriller and not a comedy and it isn't quite action packed enough for an action adventure...... So it's a... um well it's a mystery to me. Actually it's a pretty good adventure story with a few emotional parts. Overall: (78) Overall a really good show. It's even more powerful if you've watched through Tenchi TV. Easily worth purchasing. |
