Rage is a very politically minded band. In fact most everything they do has a reason. This is just a review of their first album. I'll provide a track by track rundown of the songs and my impressions of them. Tracks rated from 1-10 5 being average
(7) Track 1: Bombtrack- Good way to start of the album. Good rhythym and not a cuss word in site. He pretty much gives the premise for the band and this is more of a track about what's to come in the future of the band itself. You can easily hear the rap influence on this track. (9) Track 2: Killing in the Name of wow you absolutely cannot help but bob your head to this one. has a good 6/8 rhythym in the beginning then kicks into a heavy riff in the middle of the song. Pretty repetitive overall and in the end you get a kick in the pants by the hard hitting end chorus. (warning the end chorus has him shouting naughty words) (9) Track 3: Take the power back. Nice bouncing bassline holds the backdrop for one of my favorite songs. Zack raps about the blind american culture to a wonderful affect easily my second favorite track on the CD (warning has a few bad words). (5) Track 4: Almost seems like a spoken word type song. Not one of my favorites but it contains an interesting message. Naughty Words. (9) Track 5: Bullet in tha Head Here it is my favorite track on the CD. The bassline is centered on 1 note but it is used for more of a rhythmic emphasis in order to assist the drums. It's all about the media, and societies addiction to the TV. They say jump you say how high. Naughty Words.
(8) Track 7: Wake Up. The Hip-Hop style vocals more than make up for the straightforward rock of the last track. Set the move, then stick and move like I was Cassius, rep the stutter step and bomb a left upon the fascists. No cussing. (8) Track 8: Fistful of Steel. Morello uses the guitar more as an accent to this song. A slow descending squeal is about all you'll hear from the guitar in the beginning of the song. A nice mellow Hip-hop track. No cussing. (7) Track 9: Township Rebellion. Single note bassline and all, regardless this piece pounds it's way into your head and reflects the message of the song. More about active rebellion than anything else it becons your adrenaline to flow a little faster. Plenty o' cussin. (8) Track 10: Freedom. Probably the catchiest riff on the entire CD. It's really easier to get this song stuck in your head. the end of this track has Zack screaming Freedom at the top of his lungs "yeah right". Overall a good album and if you like rhythmic rock and roll, you should probably get it. If you're a beastie boys fan you'll like 'em. |
