Deftones Concert '98

Deftones Concert: I walked in to the Will Rogers Theatre not fully knowing what to expect. We arrived a little late in comparison to the majority of the crowd. But we probably should have arrived later. My 2 cousins, one of my friends, and I were greated by the music of Tinfed. All I can say about, tinfed is that I'm sure they are wonderful on CD, but when appearing live I believe the Vocalist is either tone deaf or inexperienced. Either way the band was being drug down by this off key personage. I almost guarantee the band is good in CD form though as the rhythmic Drum'N'Bass like sounds assault your senses and almost make you say "turn down the bass", which I have never said in my life.

Well uneventful as it was a certain young lady after goading and coercian from the mostly male crowd felt it necessary to cool down by removing items of clothing in order to taunt the crowd. I don't think it lasted very long but I'm not sure, being the good guy that I am I averted my eyes and focused on a cigarette butt on the floor.... This was compounded by the fact that she was standing about 3 feet above and behind me on one of the upper platforms of the Will Rogers Theatre. Well enough about my bout with impure thoughts, and on to the Deftones. Ah yes I believe they opened up with "Be Quiet and Drive (far away)". Beautiful song and also probably easy on poor Chino's vocal chords in comparison to the majority of their other songs. Needless to say the crowd was enthralled and rhythmically hopping, bobbing heads, and jostling their neighbors to this wonderful song. The concert was the best I've been to so far and their music has a way of working itself into your brain. Chino lashed out perfect replicas, albeit intensified, of almost every song from both CD's

The Deftones at Warped '98

7 Words was a definite crowd pleaser. I can't even describe the crowd when the first rhythm break hit. (for those of you unfamiliar, the deftones have what I like to call a rhythm break (It's kind of a intense bridge) instead of a solo break. It is a time in a song where the mainriff is altered and the rhythym changes for about 12 measures. It is a powerful tool to get the crowd hopping). The crowd went insane it looked like a jello mold just after being hit with a huge spoon.

As it grew to the close of the show, I realized, "what about engine no.9". They had even played teething. I was in for a suprise. Steph launched into the opening riff for engine no. 9. The crowd immediately shouted the first line to the song. It gets even better. What's funny is engine no .9 doesn't have a hyper intense rhythym break. This version did though. Near the end of the song Chino launched into Wicked from the KoRn album "Life is Peachy" which Chino actually did the vocals for. The night was a success and I would have done it again for twice the money if I could. Watch for the deftones everyone. If you like rhythmic aggressive music then see the Deftones the first chance you get.
